Poor, Poor Mini-Me

Yesterday, I got a frantic call from the admin staff at my daughter’s school. She’d been brought into the office (half supported, half carried is more like it) after falling and sustaining a head injury. The secretary asked me whether I wanted to come pick her up immediately and take her to hospital, or whether I wanted them to call her an ambulance and meet her at the emergency room.

!!!

As the story goes, she was on her lunch break, walking along the sidewalk with a friend, minding her own business. They were on their way back to school from the park. Her friend was walking a step ahead of her, and when she heard a thud, she looked back to see Gwen Junior laying on her back on the sidewalk, coming to! She didn’t see it happen, and my daughter doesn’t remember falling. She cracked her head and hurt her neck in the fall, and was dizzy and nauseated afterwards (and all day afterwards, really).

An Interesting Point of View

I got this in an email forward today. Normally I don’t pay attention to things like that but this one made me think. Please note that I am not taking a position for, or against, this particular issue. I’m just considering it. In the five minutes since I’ve received this email, I’ve come up with a list of pros and a list of cons. What do YOU think? And really – think objectively. Don’t just go off on a “damn welfare bums I don’t wanna support them at all!” tangent unless you’d be willing to forgo that welfare check yourself if you fell on hard times.

This was written by a construction worker.

I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes, and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit… In order to earn that pay check, I work on a rig site for a Fort McMurray construction project. At any time I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem.

HOWEVER, what I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don’t have to pass a urine test. Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Understand – I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do on the other hand have a real big problem with helping someone sit on their ass, drink beer and do drugs. Could you imagine how much money this country would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?

Mini Muffins for Mini Me

For a while we thought my daughter, Gwen Junior (that’s not really her name), had a gluten intolerance, so we stocked up on gluten free crap (which is WAY MORE EXPENSIVE I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW) and I set about learning this nutritional lifestyle. In the end, the girl turned out not to be intolerant, but I’ve kept us somewhat… lower-gluten, if you will. We feel healthier just cutting down.

Today, I did some baking for an upcoming Federated Health Charities bake sale at my office. In addition to raisin bran and blueberry bran muffins, I made a small batch of gluten free banana mini muffins, and they were the best of the bunch!
