What did you and your family have for dinner last night?
My husband and I have tried so hard to instill good music taste in our daughter, Gwen Junior. Sometimes, we feel we’ve succeeded – when we catch her humming a Jack Johnson tune under her breath, when she sings “Where, oh where, oh where is my backpack?” to the tune of “I Was Made for Loving You” by Kiss, when we find the missing Motley Crue CD in her bedroom, when she begs and pleads to go to the gig of an obscure Toronto indie band. Gwen is an alter ego. The name is derived from the name Gwenhyfar, which is what King Arthur’s wife Queen Guinevere was called in The Mists of Avalon. Gwen chose the name Gwenhyfar for her alter ego because it rhymes with her real name, Jennifer.
Gwen grew up in the wilds of Northern Canada, where winter temperatures were often colder than -30°C (-22°F). As a child she frequently saw moose, deer, caribou, bears, porcupines, foxes and otters. Also, Gwen once drove a ski-doo through a river and didn’t get stuck! Now that’s talent.
One of the most heartbreaking events of my life as a pregnant teen and very young mother was the loss of my friends. At a time when I needed support and understanding, I found myself alone save for one loyal friend and her mother.
